(Serious and not so serious) reflections about the passing of time)

Sandy is turning 14 next month. Not  a young cat any more and quite pretty still.  She has been looking at photos of clocks online all morning.  "I want to write about time and I want to think about time. S e r i o u s l y" - she said when I asked her what was she doing. "It is the right thing to do when a year ends.  People (and pets, obviously) should stop for a few hours and reflect about time. The passing of time because time is so important, it's all we've got ... and blah blah blah"  this is a bit predictable; don't we all think about time when a year ends? I don't want to think about it, I'll leave her to do it.  What else can I say (or do)?  Good luck to you.  Amen to that.  Yes, Sandy, yes, write about time. Whatever. (I'm having another coffee).

- me preguntan algunos.

It will be Christmas in a week's time. One of the things I like the most during this time of the year are the street lights. Sandy does too. She has been busy finding a few photos to show me (to impress me, for sure) (and you).  Here's Sandy with a visual feast.

Hola chicos y chicas:

el arcoiris = the rainbow

Oprah visita Australia (Oprah visits Australia)

Last September during her show Oprah announced she was taking her audience on a trip to Australia:  We are going to Austraaaaaaliaaaa!!!! she said and ...  she did!  thanks to: Qantas, Tourism Australia, the Australian Federal Government and the Goverment of NSW.

A promotion of Australia as a great tourist destination

3 months later - Oprah has been in Australia for a week.  She's done lots of things.  First she visited Hamilton island in Queensland where she tried our famous BBQ praws cooked by a famous aussie chef; then she when to the Rock, Urulu.  On the weekend in Sydney she attended a special party with 300 VIP US expatriates.  She met our PM and other politicians. Another day she climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finally this morning (Tuesday) she's recorded a program for her TV show outside the Sydney Opera House.  6000 fans were there and they all went crazy when she screamed: I love Australia!

I am not a fan of her but Sandy, the cat is so I will let her continue with this post :)

Cheers
Matilda

El señor Cohen pasó por la ciudad

I was so fortunate to hear Mr Leonard Cohen sing, play and recite his songs and poems last night.  This is an unusual event for us as not many big names come to this distant town.  There was so much feeling and poetry and talent on the DEC stage that, really, they should put an inscription on the wall, in golden characters:  "Mr Leonard Cohen from Canada, a singer, a poet, a songwriter, a novelist and a living legend was here and left an indelible imprint in the heart of the people." and a quote: "There is a crack in everything, and that's how the light gets in".

Of course, that is so silly, they would never leave any such think in writing on any wall.

I took Sandy with me. She told me that if I didn't, she would pee on the couch and in any room of the house for a month. I take her warnings seriously, so I took her with me in a big bag.  She was not the only pet. I saw two rabbits (noses moving, restless ears), one small dog (wagging tail) and another cat besides Sandy. People love their pets.

Anyway Sandy will give you her feline account of the event, if she chooses to, or some words or whatever she feels is relevant to my post.

She didn't seem too impressed ... but I can never tell with her ...

Hola amigos:

The Sardine (A love story) - Part 1
The 'Story of the Sardine' is interesting.  One never knows 'what a sardine could do for you' (I mean for a cat, of course).  Sandy's life changed for the better and had a positive effect on mine too.  I woke up one Sunday morning, as usual but on the particular day I found a sardine ...  this is how it all started.  I guess a blog is for telling events in a slowly manner, so let's Sandy tell you a bit today ...  [To keep posts short the story will be in 2 parts].

 Here's Sandy:

'¿Dónde has puesto la sardina?' - me preguntó  '... ¡Ah! claro, entiendo.

"It is 10 o'clock and it's going to be a warm day ...

In November another Australian tradition takes place. It is called 'Movember'. It is still fairly new and not as big yet as the horse races.  Some men grow a 'Mo' (a moustache) for the whole month to raise funds for men's health research.  It is fun and is also for a good cause.  I am not sure what Sandy has to say about this matter.  She is a real 'expert' on all hairy matters. I wonder if those whiskers below are Freddy's ...  Matilda

el novio de Sandy (Sandy's boyfriend)

Sandy has a cute boyfriend.  He lives next door and belongs to a nice man who speaks with a foreign accent.  They moved here about 1 year ago. One evening, last summer, shortly after Sandy and Freddy became friends, my neighbour knocked at my door and he asked me very politely if I minded that Sandy came to eat at his house.  He spoke about her as if Sandy were my daughter or my sister, not my pet.  I found that very funny.  I said I did not mind and since then she spends a lot of time there.  He often feeds her sardines (that awfully smelly fish), but Sandy loves it and has got used to eating them and now I have trouble for her to eat the food that I usually give her.

The Melbourne Cup / La carrera de caballos

Today is an important day in Australia, especially if you like horse races.  Every November, in the city of Melbourne there is a horse race that for a few minutes freezes the country. All eyes are glued to the TV screens to see which horse wins the race. This year Sandy insisted on me betting on "Descarado". I accepted because 1) he had a Spanish name ('Cheeky') and 2) I heard that he ran well on wet ground.  It was raining, so there was a good chance that he might win.  He didn't and I lost all my money.  Here's Sandy with today's lesson:

(beginners)
Las carreras de caballos: (the horse races)
Descarado
ganar: to win
el ganador: the winner (fem: la ganador+a > ganadora
perder: to lose
el perdedor: the loser
jugar: (here) to gamble

(intermediate)

acertar (to get it right) es irregular en el presente: yo acierto, tú aciertas ...

(advanced)
Modismos:
- jugar con fuego: to play with fire
- jugar limpio/sucio: to play fair / dirty
- jugar con ventaja / desventaja: to be at an advantadge / disadvantadge

- jugarsela a alguien: to play dirty on somebody
Juan me la ha jugado: John did the dirty on me

Un refrán:
desgraciado en el juego, afortunado en amores
unlucky at cards, lucky in love

Sandy, la gata bloguera (Sandy, the blogger cat(esse)

This is the first of Sandy's posts. We have agreed that we are sharing this blog, it is going to be written in English and in Spanish. We are going to make up some characters so neither Sandy nor me are real. Just for fun and entertainment.

Me llamo Sandy.

No cocina bien, yo tampoco.  Lee libros yo prefiero revistas Cosmopolitan, Vogue eyc.

               Sandy

me tratan bien = they treat me well
me pertenece = it belongs to me
contar = to tell
melado = honey colour
comilona = a good eater
dormilona = a sleepy head
il dolce far niente =  'the sweet doing nothing'

The real Sandy

Sandy did not arrive at our house in this box but she was a present, nevertheless. The best Christmas present ever. That was almost 14 years ago.  She is getting old but is still very beautiful.  She is a demanding creature and always expects 'the best'.  We do our best to comply.  I mean, why would you have a cat anyway? When she was younger she used to chase birds, mice and rabbits.  She stopped doing that and now, in her mature years, she has become more contemplative and to our surprise she has now decided to write a blog. I don't know what is she going to write about but I hope it is somehow interesting or at least entertaining. We will have fun in this household!

How do you start a blog?

How would you start a blog?

I would start like this:

"In a faraway place in the Southern Hemisphere, the name of which I do not care to recall, there lived not so long ago one of those 'nice' families who owned 'the most beautiful cat' that human eyes had ever beheld.  This marvel of Nature was known around the place as 'Sandy the Beautiful' .

She was known, admired and adored not only for her incomparable Beauty but also for her countless other qualities, to name a few: intelligence, intuition, class, glamour, wit, perseverance, imagination, an almost impossibly long tail, and a thoroughly impressive set of whiskers ..."

But ... starting a blog like this wouldn't be entirely original because I am plagiarising the most famous Spanish novelist, the one who wrote what is considered the first 'modern' novel of our time; do you know which novel I am referring to?

About this blog

I started this blog after attending a PF seminar for teachers of Spanish in Melbourne. I thought it would be good 1) to catch up with the times and 2) to improve my written English and Spanish. Later on I saw that there were too many blogs in the blog sphere and my contribution was far from remarkable. But I had fun writing it so I kept it going. Languages are my passion. I speak Spanish, Catalan, French and English well, I go by in Portuguese, I mumble some Italian but I understand it well, I have basic German from my university years. There are 34 posts I wrote between 2010 and 2011, none of them is serious. When the cat died the blog did too!

UPDATE 19-April-2012

This blog was my first attempt at blogging back in 2010. I wrote it in English and Spanish mostly as a writing exercise. Cat lovers may like it and people interested in Spanish language and culture may find something of interest here. It is light reading. The blog is now closed.

Sandy, the goddess - Sandy, la diosa

Sandy passed away on 1 December 2011. Since then I have made several attempts to keep the blog going but I have been unable to do so.  Without her I lost my inspiration.  I can't see the point in continuing with Sandy's blog when she is no longer around. So this is the last post. The blog has 34 posts in all. You are welcome to read them.
