Los reyes magos - the magi

On the night of the 5 of January the children of Spain come out into the streets of their cities to welcome 'los Reyes Magos' (the 3 Wise Men). Their names are Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar. During the night, like Santa or St Nicholas, they'll visit the children's homes to deliver presents.  With the crisis some out-of -work parents struggle to buy their kids all the presents they want, the celebrations however, go on.

Sandy wrote a letter to the Magi.  I said: 'Sandy, you can't write to the Magi because you live in Australia, you need to write to Santa'.  She took no notice of my words and posted her letter anyway.  Good luck to her.  Anyway, she's been looking around for photos she could post in her blog.  I really love them, so quirky and colourful. I hope you like them do too!

Hola amigos y amigas:

¿A qué modelo?

Sandy

New Year Resolutions for 2011

Sydney 2011 New Year Celebrations

Oceania is the part of the world that enterns in the new year first.  So Australia and New Zealand are the first countries to celebrate.  The photo above shows the fantastic fireworks in the Sydney's Waterfront last night.  These are the most spectacular and beautiful in the country.

More modest than Sydney's, but still beautiful, were the fireworks in Hobart

Hobart 2011 New Year Celebration

Pink reflections in the water during the fireworks display

I went to a friends party last night.  I had such a good time, there was so much food and drinks and good music and the company was great.  I remember I danced a lot and at midnight we watched the fireworks display from the distance. This morning I was in bed when the bell rang and I could not remember how I got there.  I asked Sandy but cats are stupid, they never give you this kind of information.  I got up and felt so dizzy while I was walking to the door and shouting 'I'm coming, I'm coming... ' Sandy was getting in the way, I almost fell flat to the ground.

Gonçalo my neighbour was there with a big smile holding a coffee pot : "Happy New Year Matilda.  This will clear your head after "last night's adventure". I noticed I blushed a bit when I heard the word 'adventure'.  Perhaps he knew something that I didn't, but most likely it was just a figure of speech for 'outing'; knowing how these Southern Europeans speak.  Never mind, whatever.

We had a coffee in the garden.  I was not good company so Gonçalo didn't stay long. He asked me if I was free this afternoon, he would like to invite me and Sandy to a BBQ.  I never met a man who invited cats as well, but then again, what do I know about Portuguese etiquette?  I accepted the invitation and went straight back to bed, after taking a couple of tablets for a terrible headache. (Please, please, I hope it is not a  sardine BBQ, I hate the fish, the smell, the look and it tastes yuk.

I don't know where Sandy is and my head is killing me so (good night).

Matilda

  ¿cómo se dice?
  • the waterfront = el muelle / los muelles
  • fireworks (display) = fuegos artificiales
  • the (door) bell = el timbre
  • to ring the bell = tocar el timbre
  • to feel dizzy = estar mareado/a
  • my neighbour = mi vecino/a
  • to clear  = despejar

(Serious and not so serious) reflections about the passing of time)

Sandy is turning 14 next month. Not  a young cat any more and quite pretty still.  She has been looking at photos of clocks online all morning.  "I want to write about time and I want to think about time. S e r i o u s l y" - she said when I asked her what was she doing. "It is the right thing to do when a year ends.  People (and pets, obviously) should stop for a few hours and reflect about time. The passing of time because time is so important, it's all we've got ... and blah blah blah"  this is a bit predictable; don't we all think about time when a year ends? I don't want to think about it, I'll leave her to do it.  What else can I say (or do)?  Good luck to you.  Amen to that.  Yes, Sandy, yes, write about time. Whatever. (I'm having another coffee).

- me preguntan algunos.

It will be Christmas in a week's time. One of the things I like the most during this time of the year are the street lights. Sandy does too. She has been busy finding a few photos to show me (to impress me, for sure) (and you).  Here's Sandy with a visual feast.

Hola chicos y chicas:

el arcoiris = the rainbow

Oprah visita Australia (Oprah visits Australia)

Last September during her show Oprah announced she was taking her audience on a trip to Australia:  We are going to Austraaaaaaliaaaa!!!! she said and ...  she did!  thanks to: Qantas, Tourism Australia, the Australian Federal Government and the Goverment of NSW.

A promotion of Australia as a great tourist destination

3 months later - Oprah has been in Australia for a week.  She's done lots of things.  First she visited Hamilton island in Queensland where she tried our famous BBQ praws cooked by a famous aussie chef; then she when to the Rock, Urulu.  On the weekend in Sydney she attended a special party with 300 VIP US expatriates.  She met our PM and other politicians. Another day she climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finally this morning (Tuesday) she's recorded a program for her TV show outside the Sydney Opera House.  6000 fans were there and they all went crazy when she screamed: I love Australia!

I am not a fan of her but Sandy, the cat is so I will let her continue with this post :)

Cheers
Matilda
