El universo ... puntos negros y suspensivos (The Universe ... dot, dot, dot)

The painter Joan Miró painted black dots in some of his works.  I thought about Miro’s work tonight at the pub.  Let me tell you why.

Today is 24 of June: Winter Solstice Celebration.  Sandy and I have been out to celebrate in very good company. After my argument with Gonçalo about e-books a couple of weeks ago I swore I would never talk to him again but, really, I was never going to keep that for too long; I think he knew that when he came to invite us to dinner tonight, he was confident that I would accept.

We decided to go to our pub. Freddy and Sandy also came, hidden in their special bags, as usual; The pub people must know we bring the cats with us, but they pretend not to see them, they turn a blind eye.

Here is the proof: a waiter left a plate with some small sardines on the table.  'Here, a special treat, for some special guests'. As there wasn't enough sardines on the plate for all of us, it seems obvious they were for the cats, who ate them with such a delight but gave them a terrible heartburn afterwards; the sardines were raw but marinated "in vinegar". Even cats must learn some lessons in Life.

We were all happy at the table, my two best friends came along too and Gonçalo had some friends as well. We got on well, the dinner was good and the wine excellent.  The best part though was that we had a very interesting and entertaining conversation.

What did we talk about you ask? Let me tell you: we didn’t talk about the current deficit crisis, the cost of living or about climate change; the topic was much more exotic: ‘The Black Holes in the Universe’.

We all had read in the paper a few days ago that a ‘black hole had swallowed a star’. You know what it's like; it's like when Sandy swallows a calamari ring: whole and in one gulp.  One of the guys, a scientist, seemed to know lots about the topic so we started asking many questions and listened to his detailed explanations. I don’t know if he was making things up as he went along as he seemed so certain about what he said; it is such a terrible time we live in, so much information so little trust.

It was then that Miro’s paintings came to mind. The man who had wanted to relearn to paint like a child had produced many works with shapes that resembled planets, stars, fat moons and red suns.  In those paintings there was something else tough:  black dots.  I guess this explains why I thought of them.

Sandy and Freddy G. were next to each other very quiet listening in fascination.  I could tell that she was making mental notes of all for later regurgitation in the blog.  So I won’t write any more now.  I notice that she’s found great photos too (some a little too overdone I must admit) but I hope you enjoy the post nevertheless.

Planet Earth is but a grain of dust in the Cosmos. Food for thought.   Matilda

No sé si me explico bien. No soy gata científica.

- No, verdes no tenemos.

Living without paper books? Are you crazy??!!

My neighbour Gonçalo and I had a heated argument the other day over a cup of coffee. It was not about the cats, nor about sardines or anything like that.

It occurred to me (unfortunately) to ask him what he knew about e-readers and if he knew which one was the best as I was thinking of buying one.

He looked at me as if I had told him I was dating Satan.

'What is the problem Gonçalo? why are you looking at me like that?'

'Sit down, Matilda'. He gave me close to one hour of uninterrupted lecture about the perils of replacing 'real objects' (like books, I guess) by their virtual equivalents, meaning e-books.

After a second cup of coffee I ventured to say this: 'Gonçalo ... books contain virtual worlds just the same as tablets or e-readers, whether you turn a page or you touch a screen it is not reality that you find in books, it is fiction! ... so what is the difference?'

The cats were following our argument without blinking. I had the feeling that they were siding with Gonçalo and this pissed me off quite a bit.

'Matilda you are such an ignorant, you are so naive that I can't believe you are my friend ... let me tell you this:  blah, blah, blah ...

I was going to throw him out of the house but I resisted. I did not want to hurt Sandy and Freddy G. because of such an idiot!

He kept talking for a little longer (while I was doing my nails) then he stopped.  He realized that I wasn't listening.

'Come on Freddy, it's time to go home'. He got up, Freddy followed him and they left.

What an arrogant pr*ck! how opinionated!  what self-importance! how patronising! what a loser.

I have not seen him for a week and I don't intend to see him ever again.

    So, that's all for now,
                                                                       Matilda :)

La mitad del aire en un espacio dado (half the air in a give space)

Living with a cat or not living with a cat? .... that is a question that Hamlet never asked, but it is one that I DO ask myself on a daily basis. Is she worth having or is she not? What do I really get from her besides admiring her good looks? The answer is always the same: I don't know.

The thing is that we were watching the news on SBS the other day when they showed an original display with blue balloons from Martin Creed, an artist from the UK. I loved the title, both in English (Half the Air in a Given Space) and in Spanish (la mitad del aire en un espacio dado). The display was in the Museum of Modern Art of Vigo a city in Galicia, northern Spain.

Shortly after I found a post-it note from Sandy next to her plate: 'I want to go to Vigo and burst all those balloons. I feel such a strong urge to pop balloons! Matilda DO something NOW!

Trying to argue with a cat that Vigo is at some 14000 km away is a waste of time, but I tried and failed.

The next morning there was another Post-it note: 'I said yesterday that I want to go to Vigo and pop those balloons'. Next to it was a small fur ball.

(Just in case you don't know, my cat has 2 powerful negotiating weapons: fur balls produced at will and accidental wees).

What could I do? It was Saturday, so I thought I might as well organise a little party with balloons she could pop. Then again, knowing her it would have to be something decent, she would not settle for anything that wasn't similar to the Vigo display.

I invited Gonçalo and Freddy for dinner and left Sandy with them. I wanted the 3 of them at my house at 6pm on the dot.

Then I rushed to the party shop where I bought all the balloons they had and a small pump to inflate them. It costed me a small fortune, but what wouldn't I do for Sandy?

Once at home I started to inflate balloons and didn't stop until there was no room to move. I could hardly see my watch: it was 4pm.

Since I didn't have the time let alone the space for cooking, I went out again to get some dinner. I bought take-away food and some delicacies from a new shop near home.

At 6pm the bell rang and Gonçalo, Freddy G. and Sandy arrived, all spruced-up. Freddy had spiky hair and Sandy was wearing a pink ribbon around her neck. (Oh, please!!!) I felt like shutting the door on them but Gonçalo didn't let me. 'Be understanding - he said- they are young and are very much in love.'

When they saw the balloons they went crazy and started to pop them as if there was no tomorrow. I feared the neighbours would call the police thinking there was a terrorist attack or worse. Luckily nothing happened, no one came. Half an hour later no balloon was left unpopped in the house. We had dinner and the rest (cleaning, tiding up etc) is history). It was past midnight when the boys went home.

Vincent Van Gogh - La noche estrellada
Last night around 10pm I was getting ready for bed and, as always, I had a look around to see where Sandy was, where she had settled for the night but I could not find her. I called her a few times (not that it makes much difference) 'Sandy, Sandy ... where are you?' I looked under the beds and inside the wardrobes, as cats love to hide in those places, but I could not find her. Then it occurred to me that she might still be outside. Why? because it was Full Moon.

It was a pleasant Saturday night, so it was possible that she was under the tree looking at the stars. She wasn't. Mmmm ... where was she? I got a little worried. I was thinking what to do next when I saw lights in Gonçalo's appartment. I wondered if she could still be there, specially if it was a 'sardine day'.

Vincent Van Gogh - la noche estrellada
It was past 10pm, perhaps too late to call in. No, it wasn't too late as I remembered Gonçalo telling me once that Portuguese people live the night. So, if this is the case, no problem. I knocked at the door. 'Gonçalo, it's me, Matilda'.

He asked what was the problem (Did I look so worried? - most likely)

    - Have you seen Sandy? Where is Freddy?
    - No. Not sure, he must be around. Come inside Matilda and we will have a look.

We looked around and surprise, surprise, Freedy wasn't home either!

Now I felt quite anxious. What do we do, Gonçalo? Should we look for them?
Gonçalo smiled and said - Are you joking? we would never find them, don't you know that cats are night creatures, that they belong to the night? Go to bed, Matilda, they will be back in the morning ...
Are you sure? What if ... (I was going to say 'what if we call the police?' but I didn't finish my sentence realising what a stupid thing I was going to say).
-Good night Matilda, sleep well and don't worry ...

It took me ages to fall asleep. I felt stupid, it's only a cat, she's not even a nice cat -I thought- but I could not help it. Where is she? The thought that she was with Freddy did not reassure me much. I turned over several times, got up an madde myslef a hot drink. I went back to bed and shortly after I fell asleep.

The next morning Sandy was lying next to me, looking more tired than usual. I had left the small window of the bathroom open, I know she can climb inside through there.

I patted her on the head and asked: 'where have you been? I've been so worried about you!' She did not move an inch. I gess I may never find out unless she writes about it. Cats are a mystery to humans.

A Vet told me once that on a full moon night, she saw once a group of cats who were forming a perfect circle and were completely still with their heads raised looking mesmerised at the moon. I have noticed that I have trouble sleeping on those nights I have never been with my girlfriends to form a circle and look at the Moon. May we should try one night. That's all for now, stay well Matilda

Freddy no me dejó.
    'No seas gallina' -me dijo
    'No insultes, Freddy'.

    Gusanos fluorescentes

... a otra cosa mariposa.

The following photos are from a light and sound event called Power Plant held in Hobart during the 10 Days on the Island event.  The video shows most of it but includes the sounds which I could not record.
